Introduction to Afrocuban Folklore: Understanding the history and music of the African diaspora.

Description: this workshop is a must for both dancers and musicians alike who want to develop a strong foundation on Afrocuban Folklore. The format will be a combination of lecture, Q&A, and real life examples. Students will gain a better understanding of the African influences in Cuban music, including:
-A brief history of the transatlantic slave trade
-Overview of the different African cultures that made it to Cuba and their contributions to Cuban culture
-Instrumentation and examples of different African styles
-Creole styles: the mixing of culture, and its contribution to art and music
-General overview of how we got from African music, to rumba, to Salsa
This is the foundations workshop that will prepare students for the next ones in this workshop series, which will include deep dives on Orisha music and Cuban rumba, among others!
